Upcycle Old Hoodies into Pillows!

Upcycle hoodies into pillow covers! by Muslin & Merlot

I've seen sweaters turned into pillow covers. Why not turn zip-up hoodies into pillow covers, too?

Look at all those pockets! Perfect for keeping an emergency Kleenex stash while watching sad movies!

A Big Thank You goes to  Amanda Formaro (Crafts by Amanda and Fun Family Crafts) for promoting this project on Facebook!

Did you stain the sleeves of your favorite hoodie? No worries - turn it into a pillow cover! Since knits don't fray, I decided to sew this pillow with wrong sides together and a single seam - no turning inside out!
You will need:

Zippered hoodie
Throw pillow that fits inside the hoodie
Scissors and/or rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat
Sewing machine

Zip the hoodie halfway up. Cut off the sleeves, collar, and waistband. Cut through the zippers. Trim until you get a square.

With wrong sides together, pin around the square. Make sure the zipper is almost - but not quite zipped to the top. Be sure to pin the top sides of the zipper close together so that the sides of the zipper don't come apart while you're sewing.

Start sewing around the square. When you reach a zippered area, start sewing the material manually - turn the knob on the side of the machine instead of sewing through with your foot pedal or automatic stitch. Go slowly so you don't break a needle on the zipper! You may need to make slight adjustments while you're manually sewing through the zipper.

Feed the zippered area backward, then forward again. Repeat. Do the same thing on the other zippered area.

Once you've sewn all around the square, unzip the hoodie-square. Stick a pillow inside.

Admire your handiwork! Another hoodie saved from the trashbin. My work here is done.

    1. Thank you! Zippers add pizazz and I'm glad to get the detail without actually having to learn how to sew one in :-).

  6. do I understand right, that it is sewn with raw edges all around the outside edge?

    1. Correct! You can totally sew it without raw edges. I just wanted to give it a rougher look.
